Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund Community Contributions
In 2007, the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund disbursed over $89,000.00 to 525 individuals referred by over 100 human service agencies in Erie County.
There are five categories of assistance for which donations are requested and dispersed.
A sampling of needs met by the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund is as follows:
- Convalescent Care: 20 year old male with muscular dystrophy needed nursing care while his mother was in hospital. ($200)
- Transportation: 36 year old woman with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis had knee replacement surgery and needed help with transportation to rehabilitation treatments. ($84)
- Medications: 51 year old woman with complications from radiation treatment of cervical cancer was helped with payment of medications. ($117.83)
- Food: 54 year old male with throat cancer needed to be on Ensure for two months and needed help covering cost. ($200)
- Utilities: 60 year old legally blind male needed help with phone bill - phone needed for medical reasons. ($111.15)
Additional special requests (on an individual basis) were granted to Haven House for financial assistance for medical and transportation costs; Women’s Summer Respite Program for scholarships to women in physical and emotional need; and Food Bank of WNY for assistance in underwriting the purchase of infant formula to be distributed by area food pantries.
The Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund also works closely with the following area hospitals: ECMC, The Catholic Health System, and Kaleida to provide immediate linkage to area pharmacies for discharged patients who cannot afford their medication.
In 2007–2008 through a one time grant process, eight social service agencies were granted monies ranging from $500 - $2500 to be used as seed money to start new programs or help with severely under-funded programs.
