Fact Sheet

DESCRIPTION
The Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund Board is a 501(c) (3) corporation responsible for raising the funds necessary to carry on its mission and the vision of Maria M. Love.

MISSION
The purpose of the Maria M. Love Fund is to provide interim financial assistance in order to promote independence and enhance the quality of life of Erie County residents with medically related conditions who may be temporarily ineligible for aid from traditional sources and to provide such additional assistance in the area of basic human needs as may be specifically approved by the Board.

HISTORY
Named for its founder, Maria M. Love, who worked tirelessly on behalf of those less fortunate in the Buffalo community during the late 19th century and early part of the 20th century. Maria M. Love was a prominent Buffalonian and social services pioneer. She established the first day care center in the United States at 159 Swan Street in Buffalo, New York. In 1903, Miss Love organized a group of 31 prominent Buffalo women to raise funds and implement a program of convalescent respite care for mothers and their children. This was the beginning of the Fund as it is known today.

OUTCOMES
During each calendar year, approximately $90,000 in financial assistance is provided directly to individuals with medically related conditions who meet our criteria for aid. Approximately 600 Erie Country residents are helped each year with financial assistance up to $300 per person. We typically work with social service agencies to identify individuals in need. Additionally, grants ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 are awarded to one or more 501(c) (3) organizations that provide assistance to Erie County residents with medically related conditions. Some past recipients of grant funding are Haven House, Food Bank of Western New York, Good Neighbor’s Health Center, Suicide Prevention/Crisis Services and Mental Health Association.

SOURCE OF FUNDING
The Fund raises approximately $125,000 per year to support our efforts. Our largest sources of income are the annual Maria M. Love Charity Ball that has been held for 108 years in the Buffalo community and an annual spring luncheon.
